WHO WE ARE

MY CREATIVE JOURNEY
Hello, I’m Miriam Galadima-Benson.
My journey into textiles began in childhood, with countless forays into the bustling open-air markets of Lagos, alongside my mother. It was there that a deep love for fabric — and the stories it carries — took root.
As an architect by training, I’ve always been drawn to the balance of creativity and construction. Quilting, with its precision, symmetry, and boundless possibility, satisfied that need perfectly. In 2017, after months of trial and error, I finished my first quilt — a nine-patch of vibrant wax prints and pieces of Adire. When I shared it online, the response was electrifying. Quilters everywhere were hungry for African fabrics, African stories, an African voice. And so Quilt Africa was born.
Our mission is to bring the vibrant beauty and rich cultural heritage of African textiles to the global quilting community — and to empower every quilter to become her own storyteller.
“Until the lion learns how to write, every story will glorify the hunter.”
We are here to equip you with the tools and knowledge to share your perspective, your creative voice, and your stories — woven into every stitch. Beyond exquisite fabric, we are dedicated to education and cultural exchange: illuminating the traditions behind African cloth, and carrying them forward whole.
Every quilt here begins the same way — by coming to know the cloth before a single cut. You read the fabric, cut it with intention, build something lasting, and belong to a community doing the very same. Read · Cut · Build · Belong.
read the cloth, then make it your own
I love to create with African fabrics. I will make the time and space for the creative pursuits that centre me and give me joy.
Come and belong.
With love from the continent.
